Basketball Pre-League Round Up

Matthew Parrott/Turlock Journal, Dec. 31, 2008

Record as of Dec. 31, 2008: 0-1 (SL), 2-6 overall. The Turlock Christian boy's varsity basketball team has experienced

some turbulence as first year
head coach Scott Snyder attempts to get the Eagles to a comfortable altitude.

The Eagles have been soundly beaten by wide margins of victory. They are a very young team with a lot of basketball to learn still. Turlock Christian has also returned the favor by defeating Don Pedro of
La Grange twice and by huge margins of victory. The first meeting between the TC Eagles and Don Pedro resulted in a score of 69-36 in favor of TC. The second meeting, which was TC's last game, and victory resulted in a score of 54-28. Senior Matt Moreda led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points. Josh Wright and John Heller both scored 8 points on the night and Heller brought down 9 rebounds. Wright hit two shots from 3-point land. Kyron Loving scored 7 points and hit one 3-pointer on the evening.  The Eagles definitely have some potential but it's going to take some work from the new coach and the player's enthusiasm must remain high.  The TC Eagles lost their first conference game to Waterford 73-32 on Dec. 19, 2008.

Le Grand 77, TC 27
Turlock Journal, Jan. 6, 2009

The Turlock Christian Eagles (0-2 SL, 2-7 overall) boys varsity basketball team has continued to struggle, taking a bad beating at the hands of a high powered Le Grand offense. The Eagles have not quit the fight though. Senior Matt Moreda led the Eagles in scoring with 16 points on the night. TC's John Heller put up 6 points, Austin Morelli has 3 and Brandon Rodgers added another 2 points. The Eagles were outscored 26-12 in the third quarter and did not score any points in the fourth. Turlock Christian will travel to Delhi on Tuesday.

Mariposa 73, TC 28
Turlock Journal, Jan. 9, 2009

The Turlock Christian Eagles (0-3 SL, 2-8 overall) were at the mercy of a powerfully stacked Mariposa squad Friday night that had two players well into the teens in rebounds and scoring. The Eagles have had a rough season thus far, except when playing Don Pedro. By half-time Mariposa led TC 37-7. Mariposa only had one shot from 3-point range on the night but Turlock Christian's Josh Wright hit three from treyville. Wright ended the night with 9 points. John Heller led the Eagles with 15 points and Matt Moreda put up another 8 points.

TC Boys Fall to Le Grand

Matthew Parrott, Turlock Journal, Jan. 23, 2009

Turlock Christian junior Josh Wright one-hands it to the hoop over a Le Grand defender on Friday night.

The Turlock Christian Eagles boys basketball team (1-7 SL, 3-11 overall) mounted a third quarter comeback that brought them within 7 points against an extremely strong Le Grand (6-1 SL, 12-2 overall) team but dropped the contest 76-48. The skies have been anything but friendly for the TC Eagles boys' team this season. Comprised mostly of juniors, one sophomore and one freshman, the young TC team showed a flash of their potential Friday night when they closed in on a huge deficit against the Le Grand Bulldogs during their Homecoming game at Cal State University Stanislaus' Warrior Arena.

Le Grand came out in the first quarter all business jumping ahead 10-0 in the first three minutes of play. By the end of the first quarter the Bulldogs had outscored the Eagles 18-4. The Eagles struggled in the first two quarters of play, shooting cold from the field and getting out rebounded by an aggressive Le Grand squad. To add to TC's struggles the Bulldogs were hot, rarely missing the hoop.  With
5:55 remaining in the second quarter, Le Grand led Turlock Christian 26-4. The Eagles took a timeout and regrouped. Turlock Christian's Austin Morelli took a John Heller pass into the Bulldog's paint with a Le Grand defender on either side of him. Under the hoop Morelli threw up a convincing combination of a head fake followed by a shooting fake, both Le Grand defenders bit on the fake and went into the air in an attempt to block the shot. As they came back down Morelli went up and put the rock in the hole off of the backboard for 2 points. This began a second quarter run by the Eagles.  Sophomore Eagle Brandon Rogers took the ball down court and hit a jump shot from the outside corner, then returned and hit a shot from the top of the key. TC's Tyler Landmeier sunk a shot off of a Rogers pass. Rogers ended the night with 10 points and led the Eagles with 5 steals. The lone senior on the team, Matt Moreda, served as Homecoming King and led Turlock Christian in scoring with 12 points on the night and 7 rebounds. As the second quarter drained, Moreda drove the ball the length of the court, right through the middle and scored.

"They (Le Grand) really had the momentum of the game in the first half. We had to pick our intensity up all night. This team is well conditioned. We were getting tired and need to work on our conditioning in order to finish games strong," said Moreda. "They are a quick team and have a couple of big guys in the middle, they're great shooters too. Le Grand is one of the best teams in our league."  Going into halftime Le Grand led Turlock Christian 37-20. The Eagles started the third quarter moving the ball around.
Rogers to Heller to Moreda to the hoop. Roger's picked off a Le Grand pass that resulted in one of Josh Wright's two 3-point goals. TC began gaining some ground on the Bulldogs, with three minutes remaining in the third Le Grand's lead was cut to 10 points. Wright led the Eagles with 8 rebounds and added another 6 points to the scoreboard. Turlock Christian's Kyron Loving hit the next from 3-pointland and by the end of the third, the Eagles trailed the Bulldogs 43-36. Loving finished the night with 5 points and Heller had 6 points on the night.  The Bulldogs utilized a very aggressive blanket backcourt press and shooting aces Noel Rojas and Ian Thompson to regain control of the game. Rojas scored 24 points for Le Grand and Thompson added another 17. Le Grand began to procure and capitalize on TC turnovers, missing very few shots from the field.

The Eagles had the Bulldogs against the ropes for a while and were able to keep the score within 10 points until midway through the fourth quarter. Le Grand went on a full, all-out offensive tear in the remaining handful of minutes scoring 26 points.  The Turlock Christian Eagles will host the
Delhi Hawks 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Calvary Baptist Gym.

Turlock Journal, Dec. 11, 2008

The Turlock Christian Lady Eagles (3-1) lost to Central Valley at their home tournament. Le Grand Grounds TC Eagles
Matthew Parrott, Turlock Journal, Dec. 17, 2008
TC Eagle Candice Balswick drives to the hoop after stealing the ball from Le Grand.

The Turlock Christian girls varsity basketball team has gotten off to a strong 5-2 start this season. Monday night the Eagles lost to a determined, though less talented Le Grand squad 42-31. Too many turnovers, missed shots and opportunities is what beat the TC Eagles.

"I am really proud of my girls tonight for not breaking down and allowing Le Grand to beat us badly. We were a little cold on the floor tonight mainly because we haven't been on the court for practice since last Wednesday, but I am still really proud of how they held together as a team tonight," said head coach Edwin Santiago.

Turlock Christian got off to a slow start and Le Grand quickly capitalized on each mistake and missed shot. Erin Santiago had a good showing scoring 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists on the night. Amy Wright added another seven points and a team leading 12 rebounds. At half-time Le Grand was leading the TC Eagles 25-12. In the first seconds of the third quarter Erin Santiago drove the ball on a fastbreak and scored two points setting the tempo for the TC girls. Candice Balswick then grabbed one of her five steals on the night, drove the ball down court and took the shot. The shot missed but Balswick rebounded her own shot and put it up again for the score. Kaisa Spycher had a great defensive showing with six rebounds and three blocked shots.

At the end of the third quarter the TC Eagles were within eight points of Le Grand. The fourth quarter brought lots of fouling, missed shots and mental errors abound. In the last minute of play both Spycher and Erin Santiago delighted the crowd as each player stole the ball and scored. "In the second half the girls showed more purpose on the court, they were attacking on the inside. Like I said, I am really proud of them for not caving in tonight. We have got to get back to work on offense... tonight's loss was not the defense's fault they kept Le Grand from a high scoring night. I'm looking forward to next week," added coach
Santiago. The Turlock Christian girls will begin tournament play at Bradshaw Christian on Thursday.

TC 47, Victory Christian 23
Turlock Journal, Dec. 18, 2008

Girls Basketball Early Season Review
Turlock Journal, Jan. 5, 2009

Record as of Jan. 5: 1-1 SL, 10-4 overall. The Turlock Christian girls varsity basketball team is on a mission. They are an extremely talented team that is getting very close to putting all of the pieces of the puzzle together. Head Coach Edwin Santiago keeps his team disciplined, sharp and motivated. He's one of those quiet coaches that puts a great deal of passion into the game and his Eagles have been responding with victories. In a Southern League contest that saw each and every Eagle

score, Turlock Christian won their first conference game Monday night in atomic fashion with the leveling of third place Delhi (5-5) 53-15.

Candice Balswick and Kaisa Spycher led TC in scoring with 9 points each. Amy Wright and Molly Farrar both added another 6 a piece while Marly Burton and Emily Buess put up 5 points on the evening in a cavalcade of scoring. Spycher led the Eagles with 10 rebounds and Erin Santiago pulled 9 boards down.
Santiago is one of the top shooters in the SL, currently averaging 14 points per game and has bombed a total of 42 points from 3-pointville. She is the offensive and emotional leader of the TC Eagles. Her play is aggressive, tenacious and deliberate. Santiago is a never say die type of player. With Balswick constantly stealing the ball from opponents, Wright and Spycher grabbing everything that falls off of the rim or backboard and the strength of Burton in the middle... the TC Eagles have a great shot at the Southern League crown. The biggest road block between that crown and Turlock Christian is defending league champs Le Grand (12-1), TC is currently in second place behind Le Grand. TC's only loss in league play came at the hands of powerhouse Le Grand 42-31. Le Grand is a very proud, determined team with one of the very best players in the area in Jennifer Hansen. On the night of that loss TC head coach Santiago said, "We played our worst game tonight, we beat ourselves." TC cannot have another game like that, especially against a team like Le Grand. The Eagle's destiny seems to be sitting right in the palm of Erin Santiago and Co's hands and Le Grand and every other team will be waiting for any chance to take TC out of competition.

Mariposa 44, TC 40 (OT)
Turlock Journal, Jan. 8, 2009

The Turlock Christian Eagles (1-2 SL, 10-5 overall) girls varsity basketball team played a tough Mariposa team on Thursday night. The Eagles utilized a backcourt press the entire game to harness the Mariposa offense. The strategy worked great until the final minutes when the Eagles started to gas. Amy Wright led TC in scoring netting 7 points. Erin Santiago scored 8 points and had 3 assists. Eagle Kaisa Spycher grabbed most every ball that fell near her, ending the night with 19 rebounds and 3 points. Turlock Christian will next play in Denair on Monday.

Eagles Soar to Victory Over Coyotes
Matthew Parrott, Turlock Journal,  Jan. 14, 2009

The Turlock Christian girls varsity basketball team (2-2 SL, 11-5 overall) were running like a finely tuned machine Monday night as they defeated the rough and tumble Denair Coyotes 62-32.  Denair High girl's team has had their share of ups and downs so far. Denair is a tough team but they've had big problems when facing some of the more dominate basketball teams. The Coyotes have lost six of their last eight games and they've faced some steep competition including: Le Grand, Hilmar and Oakdale, not to mention Turlock Christian.

The Eagles' deep bench, that is nearly as strong as the first string, has been a key factor in their success.

Denair’s Mallorie Gallardo prepares to shoot, guarded closely by TC’s Marly Burton and Molly Zuhlke.

Monday night, Denair was able to stick with Turlock Christian midway through the first quarter, taking the lead for a moment.  "They did a great job and really challenged us in the first quarter, we had to change up our game plan a little bit," said Turlock Christian head coach Edwin Santiago.

At the end of the first quarter the Eagles led the Coyotes 17-11, which was the last time Denair came close to catching up with TC.  Turlock Christian used hard pressing in the backcourt and began to get into foul trouble right away.  Mallorie Gallardo led the Coyotes in scoring, rebounds, bumps and bruises and all around reckless abandoned play against the Eagles. She has a motor that will not quit, and on Monday night she scored 9 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Gallardo was completely sacrificing herself physically, diving to save balls from going out of bounds.

The second quarter began with a bad Denair pass that ended up in the hands of the Eagle's Amy Wright. Wright passed the ball to Erin Santiago who put the rock in the box for 2 points.
Santiago had another superb night of play, controlling the floor on the way to racking up 14 points, snagging 6 steals and 3 assists. Santiago netted two from 3-pointville.  The Eagle's Candice Balswick also hit two from 3-point territory, ending the night with 9 points. TC's Kara Gabrielson had a spectacular offensive showing as well, scoring 8 points, 3 assists, 3 steals, and hitting a 3-pointer.

Just before the half-time buzzer went off Denair's Madison Norquist snatched a wild TC pass, drove it down court and hit a 3-pointer. TC lead Denair at half-time 32-18. Norquist finished the night with 6 points.  The TC Eagles came out in the third quarter utilizing a more aggressive full court press. The physically smaller but quick Coyotes were overwhelmed, frustrated and began giving the ball up to TC.

The press wore on Denair. Eagle freshman center Marly Burton continually powered the ball away from the Denair squad. In one of her best games yet,
Burton led her team in rebounds with 13 and scored 8 buckets. Kaisa Spycher and Emily Breuss each contributed 9 rebounds for TC and Aubrey Larson brought down another 7. Molly Farrar and Spycher each scored 6 points against Denair. Denair's Annie Anderson hit two 3-pointers on the night, scoring 8 points.  Towards the end of the third quarter TC went on a 9-0 scoring run, capitalizing off of Denair turnovers. By the end of the third quarter TC led 45-24.  At 7:24 in the fourth quarter, TC's Santiago grabbed a Denair ball and passed off to Balswick who then dumped the ball for 3. That was pretty much the end of the night for TC's first string, as coach Santiago sent a bunch of fresh, rested players onto the court. They picked up right where the first string left off.

"Our second string plays our first string everyday in practice, so they already know what high-caliber competition feels like,"
Santiago said. "Farrar and Burton have come along really well. Farrar is a great shooter. I am looking forward to coaching these girls for the next few years. Tiffanie Snyder is playing really well for us, her willingness to make sacrifices and helping our offense develop is key. Tiffanie is our team co-captain and isn't in the hunt for the glory. Her playing style is always for the good of the team. That is to be commended."

Denair head coach Mark Perry wasn't too happy about the loss, but he was pleased with his team's efforts against the Eagles.  "We did a good job containing them in the first half and the girls put out a great effort, but we didn't adjust very well to the change in their press in the second half," he said. "We missed some opportunities and just didn't adjust quick enough to their adjustments." The Denair Coyotes will play Mariposa at
7:30 p.m. on Thursday at Mariposa. The Turlock Christian Eagles will play Waterford at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at home.

TC 77, Waterford 11
Turlock Journal, Jan. 15, 2009

Turlock Christian (3-2 SL, 12-5 overall) head coach Edwin Santiago told his team to look at their contest against Waterford as if it were the most important game of the season for them and the TC Eagles responded by destroying Waterford by 66 points. Amy Wright finished the game with 14 points and a team high 11 rebounds. The Eagles scoring machine Erin Santiago had another superb game netting a team high 17 points, hitting four shots from 3-pointland. Candice Balswick refused to let Waterford keep the ball, leading TC with 6 steals often sacrificing her body in the effort to do so, Balswick also scored 7 points. TC outscored Waterford 32-2 in the second half of play.

Le Grand 72, TC 31
Turlock Journal, Jan. 20, 2009

The Turlock Christian varsity girl's basketball team (3-3 SL, 12-6 overall) lost a tough game against the Le Grand Bulldogs 72-31 Tuesday night. Cal State University Stanislaus-bound Erin Santiago led TC in scoring with 10 points on the night. Aubrey Larson scored 5 points, Candice Balswick added another 4 points and Tiffany Snyder scored 3.

TC Girls Down Hawks for Homecoming Win
Matthew Parrott, Turlock Journal, Jan. 23, 2009

The Turlock Christian Eagles girl's basketball team (4-3 SL, 13-6 overall) demonstrated that they had not lost any of their poise on Homecoming night, routing the Delhi Hawks 52-23.  The Eagles, just coming off of a devastating 72-31 loss at the hands of Southern League first place Le Grand were a bit shaken.  "Some of the players on our team had not yet experienced what it's like to be beaten by a strong, aggressive team like Le Grand. That created an atmosphere of timidity amongst some of the girls and they have to learn how to remain calm and collected under those circumstances," said Turlock Christian head coach Edwin Santiago.

Santiago was able to get his team back on track with a few good practices. Turlock Christian is currently two games out of first place in the Southern League. On Friday night at CSUS Warrior Arena, the Eagles overwhelmed the Hawks with their shooting ability. TC used the first quarter to find their center and balance, taking a modest 13-7 lead.  The Eagles quickly shifted from gliding to flying high as they went on a 26-2 scoring run in the second quarter. TC shooters Erin Santiago and Kaisa Spycher led the way for the Eagles, both netting 11 points a piece. Most everything seemed to go right for Turlock Christian against Delhi, rebounding efforts paid large dividends.

Junior Aubrey Larson and freshman Marly Burton each accounted for 10 of the Eagles total 55 rebounds. Erin Santiago pulled down 7 boards as well. "Almost every player got the chance to score tonight, it was a total team effort. Our shooting is what won this game for us," said coach
Santiago. One TC player had to pull double duty on the night. After Amy Wright finished the night with 9 points, she traded in her high tops for a pair of high heels and served as the Turlock Christian Junior Homecoming Princess.

Candice Balswick led the Eagles in steals, grabbing a total of 7 and scoring 6 points for TC.  "This was an intense game.
Delhi is a good team, but we worked really hard for this game. The Le Grand game inspired us to work really hard and to get better. We are going to continue to work hard. We want to make the playoffs and succeed," said Balswick.  Freshman Burton added another 3 steals to the TC total. The Eagles came up with a total of 16 assists against Delhi, moving the ball around a good deal and mixing up the shooters.

"I had different players shadowing our main shooter which creates an opportunity for more players to score. When the defense is expecting a specific player to take the shot it leaves others open to do so," Coach Santiago said. "We did a great job at getting the ball inside tonight. Our post players - Spycher,
Burton and Emily Breuss were there for us and did a terrific job."  For the first time this season Turlock Christian did not utilize their press or zone defense, instead opting for a one-on-one defense. Spycher blocked 4 shots for TC.  "Our timing needs to improve to get openings, we need to work on our communication in man-on-man defense. We will continue to improve our defense for the playoffs. Overall they did a great job tonight. The road to the playoffs leads to Le Grand, and we will be prepared for them," said coach Santiago. "We to work on our field goal percentage. So we're going to drill on our selection and shot rotation, and form shooting to increase field goal percentages."  The Turlock Christian Eagles will host Denair 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Calvary Baptist Gym.

Santiago Leads TC To Semi-Finals
Brian VanderBeek, Modesto Bee, February 26, 2009

Every time Turlock Christian High's Erin Santiago turns around, she finds herself in familiar surroundings. On Thursday, she closed out the home portion of her high school basketball career with a 21-point effort in a 37-27 victory over Ripon Christian in the cozy Calvary Baptist Church gym. Next up is a Sac-Joaquin Section Division V semifinal Tuesday at Galt High against Bradshaw Christian, whose 2008 summer travel team boasted Santiago at guard. And when this season is over for the Eagles, the next basketball stop for Santiago will be Cal State Stanislaus, a campus less than a mile from Turlock Christian's classrooms.  "She's staying close," said Erin Santiago's father and TC head coach Edwin Santiago. "She realized last year that she wanted to stay around family, and we're really excited that she's decided to stay close."

The only thing now unfamiliar for Santiago is the situation in which Turlock Christian finds itself, reaching the semifinals for the first time in school history. The Eagles never trailed, but probably expected to be leading by a wider margin than 13-9 at halftime after holding Ripon Christian without a field goal in the opening 16 minutes. The Knights, who finished the season 11-14, stayed close only by making 9 of 14 shots from the free-throw line in the first half, constantly trying to work the ball inside against the Eagles' defense. "We like to do things in unusual ways," joked RC coach Kirk Tillema. "We talked about it at halftime that as ugly as we played, we were only down four points."  The first half wasn't exceptionally sloppy, as the teams combined for 18 turnovers, but neither team got many open shots. Turlock Christian's defense put pressure on RC's guards, clogging the passing lanes.

But the defensive pressure also got Turlock Christian in foul trouble and forced the Eagles to relax the defense slightly. Kelsey Tillema had four of her team-high 10 points in a 6-0 run that tied the game 17-17 with 2:15 remaining in the third quarter. Just as quickly, Turlock Christian began finding its range on offense. Candice Balswick hit a 3-pointer and scored on a steal, and Santiago hit one of her five 3-pointers as the Eagles closed on a 8-2 run for a 25-19 lead entering the fourth quarter. "We had a hard time scoring anything inside, but Erin hitting those shots and then Candice hitting really helped us out," Edwin Santiago said. Ripon Christian, with virtually no outside game, never was able to make a run, and was done in by Santiago's eight fourth-quarter points.
