Big Valley Christian 9, TC 5
Tuesday, March 10, 2009

After a 4-4 tie in the first inning, the Eagles couldn't overcome three runs in the second and two more in the fifth by Big Valley Christian in the nonconference road game. However, catcher Miles Martinez managed an RBI and two runs to help Turlock Christian (2-3) stay in the game.

Denair Thumps Eagles in Five Innings
Chhun Sun, Turlock Journal, March 20, 2009

Denair High baseball player Ernie Dellgadillo played his role as the clean-up batter in his usual fashion, sending his teammates home with long shots in different directions at the Pedretti Sports Complex. Pitcher Brian Willis, for the most part, shut down his challengers before teammate and third baseman Brett Arnold got some fun on the mound in the final inning of a game that was seemingly decided early on.

And coach Ron Cornell couldn't have been happier after looking at the final score sheet and seeing the 11 hits his Coyotes produced. It was that type of day.

The Coyotes quickly dispatched shorthanded Turlock Christian High in a 14-1 five-inning shellacking Thursday afternoon in Southern League action. Denair (7-1, 2-1) continued to thrive after losing to
Waterford last week, and now have outscored its last two opponents 27-2. The Eagles (2-7, 0-3) have had some trouble lately, as they have lost four in a row.

Cornell said the key to earning the win was taking out Turlock Christian pitcher junior Trevor Starn, who seemed flustered after the Coyotes started hitting well. They scored six runs on three hits in the second inning, highlighted by outfield shots from Willis and Dellgadillo - who both finished the frame with two RBIs apiece. "I knew Starn would give us trouble so I was glad to see us come out and get him out of the game," Cornell said. "He gets tougher as the game goes on. I'm glad we got him out quickly, because we had two outs before we got our first two runs" in the first inning.

In fact, Turlock Christian used three pitchers to try to cool down the Denair hitters. But it hardly worked, as
Arnold went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, senior Dylan Werner had two hits and three RBIs, Willis finished with a double and two RBIs and Dellgadillo completed one of the better outings with a double and four RBIs. Sophomore Trevor Werner added two RBIs. The Eagles' lone score came in the first inning when Starn had an RBI single to send in freshman John Westburg.

The Coyotes seemed to have a rejuvenated sense of determination after losing to
Waterford 7-2 on March 12. And that's good, considering they will face Le Grand High on Tuesday and Mariposa County High on Thursday in a week of playing some of the league's best teams. "I think it was good for us in a way because no one will get their head big," Dellgadillo said of the Waterford loss. "And now we know what we have to do to beat the good teams."

By pulling off a late-game rally, the Eagles not only snap a two-game losing streak in the Southern League but also avenged an earlier loss to the Bulldogs. Turlock Christian had three scores in the final two frames to come back from a 3-1 deficit. Geoff Rettenmeyer had a double, Cody Alldrin finished with two RBIs and John Westburg added a double for the Eagles (5-11-1, 2-6 SL). On April 15, Turlock Christian lost to league foe Denair in the championship game of the Denair Boosters Tournament.

The Turlock Christian Eagles defeated the Delhi Hawks 16-7 Tuesday in a wild game. The score after the first inning was a close 10-7, but then TC freshman Ruban Castrejon came to the mound and shut out the Hawks for the rest of the game, earning his first win as an Eagle. Leading hitters for TC were John Kim (2 for 4), Robbie Smallwood (4 for 5, with 3 RBIs), Miles Martinez (2 for 4, with 3 RBIs), Matt Moreda (2 for 5) and John Westburg (2 for 4, with 4 runs scored). VARSITY GOLF

Turlock Christian Boys Golf Team
Coach: Jeff Cederlind (7th year); Last year's records: 10-2

Key returners: Junior Beau Warda, senior Anders Jerner and sophomore Kathleen Rojas

Key newcomer: Sophomore James Riley

Outlook: Entering this season, these are some of Turlock Christian High's accolades in boys golf.

The Eagles have won four straight Sac-Joaquin Section titles in Division VI, in addition to owning five consecutive league championships. They also have junior Beau Warda, who tied for first place at last season's sectionals. But coach Jeff Cederlind seems a little worried. It might be because this is the youngest team since the Eagles reinstated boys golf seven years ago, when they were loaded with freshmen. He has one senior, and four freshmen.

He expects this year's golfers to get into championship form after the first month. "They're not proven at competition," Cederlind said. "My biggest worry is how they perform under competition. We have a lot of 18-year-od tournaments scheduled. Hopefully, it'll get them prepared for the postseason."

The seventh-year coach has plenty of players to develop, but he's looking at the likes of sophomore Kathleen Rojas (who competes with the boys because there's no girls golf at the school) and senior and three-year varsity player Anders Jerner for leadership. Rojas has proven she's not fazed at playing against boys. "They're all really focused on improving," Cederlind said. "They're all driven to really want to improve their game. So that's fun to work with."

Four Matches in One Week? No Problem for Turlock Christian

Chhun Sun, Turlock Journal, April 4, 2009

Jeff Cederlind was concerned before this season began that his Turlock Christian boys golf team couldn't match up with the success the Eagles have had in the past few years. He was concerned because this was the youngest team he ever coached in his seven-year tenure. He didn't know how they would handle a long season, and the expectations that came with it. Well, he worries no more.

Just look at what the Eagles accomplished this week. They had four matches ... and won all of them against Mariposa High, Le Grand High and Waterford High (twice). One leader for the Eagles is junior Beau Warda, who fired a 2-over-par 36 against Mariposa at the Sierra Meadows golf course on Thursday. "I'm much more confident," Cederlind said. "We've shown a lot of improvements and our play is much more consistent." That's good, considering what's ahead.

The Eagles compete in the Palmetto High Golf Championships at
Myrtle Beach in South Carolina next weekend, when some 75 teams from across the country are scheduled to play. After that, they have a couple more league matches to win in capturing their sixth straight league title, while aiming for their fifth Sac-Joaquin Section title in five years.

Bulldogs get shot at redemption: The Turlock High girls soccer team was heartbroken after losing to Golden Valley High earlier in the season. Since then, the Bulldogs have been on a tear. They have captured wins over teams like
Merced and Pitman high schools. And now, the Bulldogs have a chance to redeem themselves against Golden Valley, as the two Central California Conference teams face each other at 4 p.m. Monday at the Turlock Sports Complex.

Getting out of a slump: The Hilmar High baseball team really knows how to bounce back. The Yellowjackets suffered a 3-0 shutout to Livingston High on Tuesday but got revenge two days later in a 12-2 win in the finale of the home-and-home series. The Yellowjackets (5-10, 3-4 Western Athletic Conference) have been slipping, as the victory over
Livingston marked the second time they won in six games. Hilmar will play host to Gustine High at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Turlock Christian remained undefeated in the Southern League with a 9-0 record, as the Eagles improved to 9-4 overall.

Southern League Tournament
Turlock Journal, April 27, 2009

The Turlock Christian High Eagles put forward a solid performance, winning the Southern League Tournament with 468 strokes at Stevinson Ranch Golf Course. This means they qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V South Divisional Championship on May 5 at Stevinson Ranch. Mariposa finished second with a 468, and Waterford came in third with a 601. Beau Warda led the Eagles by firing a 13-over-par 72, as he was followed by Chase Ulrich (91), Anders Jerner (94), James Riley (98) and Kathleen Rojas (100).

Opponents Ruled Ineligible, Golf Title Goes to TC
Chhun Sun, urlock Journal, May 6, 2009

The Turlock Christian High golfers thought their season was over after finishing third in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI Championships at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton on Monday.

But Eagles coach Jeff Cederlind was "stunned" to learn from athletic director
Randy Hopkins early Tuesday afternoon that the teams that finished ahead of Turlock Christian - Jim Elliott High-Lodi and Forest Lake High-Auburn - were disqualified by the SJS commission. This means the Eagles have captured five consecutive section titles, as they move on to the section's Masters Tournament for the fifth consecutive time. The sectional finals begin Monday at 1:30 p.m. at The Reserve.

Hopkins was told Jim Elliott was disqualified after unknowingly having an ineligible golfer playing Monday. Forest Lake, on the other hand, mistakenly turned in an incorrect scorecard at the divisional tournament, Hopkins said. "It's given me new life and it shows me the respect for the game," Cederlind said. "Golf is a game without referees and you're responsible for your own mistakes and strokes." Before the disqualification, the Eagles finished in third place at the divisional tournament after firing a 444, finishing behind Jim Elliott (426) and Forest Lake (439).

TC Junior Pulls Off Surprise at Golf Sectionals
Chhun Sun, Turlock Journal, May 13, 2009

Turlock Christian High junior Beau Warda noticed that in every direction his fellow golfers at The Reserve at Spanos on Monday were getting frustrated at the wind, as it threw everyone off of their best game. Park

Not so much for Warda, thanks in part to having experience with the
Stockton course and recognizing how bad the conditions can get. That helped him pull off one of the biggest surprises at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament, tying for second place with a 4-over-par 72, granting himself a shot at the Northern California Championships. He will continue his run 8 a.m. Monday at the Butte Creek Country Club in Chico, Calif. "I had low expectations heading into Masters," Warda said, "and I'm going to keep the expectations the same heading into NorCal."

Very high expectations were put on Turlock High senior Sam Smith, who had won the two previous sectional titles heading into Monday. But he also struggled with the wind, failing to move on after shooting a 77 to place fourth; the top three players advanced. Johansen High's Daniel Covrig won the tournament with a 75.

Folsom High (417), Jesuit High (418) and Christian Brothers High (422) advanced to NorCal after finishing in the top three in the team standings, as Turlock High (430) and Turlock Christian High (479) did not move on.

For Warda, he was a bit surprised about advancing. He started his first hole with a bogey, but quickly recovered on the next hole with a par. That, he said, really gave him confidence. He maintained his composure, and even survived the 16th hole, where there was water on the right and a bunker on the left. In other words, he avoided disaster to become the first player in Turlock Christian history to advance to NorCal. "He was not getting too frustrated," coach Jeff Cederlind said. "He was not letting the wind get to him."

Turlock just missed NorCal by one stroke, as Smith led with a 77 and was supported by Paul Smith (85), Travis Souza (85), Jeff Chapman (89) and Ernesto Perez (94). Turlock Christian, on the other hand, was playing in its fifth consecutive sectional finals. The Eagles struggled with Kathleen Rojas scoring a 92 followed by Chase Ulrich (98), James Riley (105) and Anders Jerner (108).

TC's Warda Only Five Strokes Away From State
Chhun Sun, Turlock Journal, May 19, 2009

Turlock Christian High junior Beau Warda kept his expectations low heading into Monday's Northern California Championships at the Butte Creek Country Club in Chico. That attitude helped him become his school's first regional tournament golfer.

But that didn't mean he wasn't going to take the rare opportunity seriously, considering the fact that anyone in his position would have loved to advance to play in the CIF Championships at Poppy Hills Golf Course in
Pebble Beach. So that explains why Warda found himself very disappointed after shooting a 5-over 77 and missing the state tournament. "He was a little sad," Turlock Christian coach Jeff Cederlind said. "I think everyone would feel that way after you play a round. I'm proud of him for hanging in there and shooting a respectable score." Warda needed a 72 in order to advance.

He finished with three birdies (par-5 No. 2, par-5 No. 9 and par-3 No. 17), but hit two balls into the water and one out of bounds. In terms of weather, this particular course was a little different from The Reserve at
Spanos Park in Stockton, where he was a big surprise and fired a 76 against strong winds at last week's Masters Tournament - finishing ahead of two-time defending tournament champion and Turlock High senior Sam Smith, who's headed to USC to play golf.

This time, it was just hot. But Warda managed to survive and played well throughout the day. Now, the expectations for him will be different heading into next season. "Just another stepping stone for our program," Cederlind said of Warda's regional tournament performance. "It's the first time we had a player advance to NorCal. It's exciting to see what happens next year for him as an individual and for us as a team."

VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER

Turlock Christian Girls Soccer Team
Shirley Brand; (5th year); Last year's record: 9-8-4

Key returners: Senior forward Emily MacLaren, senior midfielder Tiffanie Snyder, junior defender Megan Brown
Key newcomers: Senior goalkeeper Jeannie Hamilton

Outlook: Senior forward Emily MacLaren is the leader on the Turlock Christian High girls soccer team, and rightfully so. She led the Eagles in scoring last season with 18 goals along with seven assists, in addition to already accepting to play for Biola University, of the NAIA, next season.

But MacLaren is not the only player coming back from last season's
9-8-4 team. "Most every (player) is a key returner," coach Shirley Brand said.

This means the Eagles are a promising program, not just for this season. Brand expects her Eagles to do well for at least the next two seasons, highlighted by her stellar junior class headlined by the likes of Camille Imbo and Danae Smith. But let's not forget about this year's players, as MacLarsen, senior midfielder Tiffanie Snyder and junior defender Megan Brown will all play huge roles. And then there's senior goalkeeper Jeannie Hamilton, who did not play last season but decided to return for one last time.

Brand is not just excited about the players, either. The fifth-year also boasts an impressive coaching staff, one made up of student-athletes and former players of the Cal State Stanislaus men's soccer team. But there is one thing that worries Brand, and that are injuries. The Eagles were plagued with injuries in past seasons, and the coach hopes it's different this time.

Even With a Freshman Pitcher, Eagles Pull Off a League Win
Chhun Sun, Turlock Journal, March 28, 2009

Turlock Christian High's Tara Lafollette didn't have too many nerves running through her while she was in the pitching circle against Denair High at Pedretti Park on Friday afternoon. Which is somewhat a surprise.

Turlock Christian High shortstop Candice Balswick tries to tag a Denair High base runner in Friday’s game between the two schools. Turlock Christian won 11-6.

Lafollette is a freshman. But she didn't let the little varsity experience she had get in the way, as she pitched a solid complete game in Turlock Christian's 11-6 victory over the Coyotes in Southern League action. Denair - which gave a pretty good fight - remained winless after the game with an 0-11 overall. Turlock Christian coach
Randy Hopkins couldn't help but give praise to his freshman pitcher, one who had to fill in for sophomore ace Stephanie Huber. Huber couldn't throw because of a hurt back.

In the end, Lafollette had eight strikeouts, and allowed five hits and four walks in a game where the Eagles (3-3, 2-3 SL) had good offensive performances from their top three batters. "I came out and gave it my all and that's all I can do," Lafollette said.

The Eagles jumped to a 10-1 advantage after two innings and that was enough to hold off the Coyotes - though they put in three runs in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 11-4. Turlock Christian kept the bats going, as the Eagles finished with 12 hits. Junior Candice Balswick went 4-for-5 at the plate with an inside-the-park home run, sophomore Angelina Martin went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Kara Gabrielson went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a triple. Huber, with a bad back, finished with a 3-for-4 day and two RBIs.

"Our mindset was: We wanted to beat Denair,"
Hopkins said. "They're a rival of ours. I'm not thinking about Denair being 0-10 ... We're just out to win a ball game. Even with a team that hasn't won a ball game, they can come back and beat you. They came back tonight and had a chance to beat us."

Turlock Journal, May 6, 2009

Two good things happened for the Eagles in their SL finale against the Coyotes: They pitched and hit well. That combination amounted to a big win for Turlock Christian High, which punished Denair High with three runs in the first inning at Denair High's softball field. The Eagles (7-10, 6-8) continued their onslaught in the fourth and sixth frames, combining for eight scores. Angelica Martin (two hits, two runs, one double and one RBI), Molly Farrar (two hits, two runs, a stolen base and one RBI) and Stephanie Huber (2-for-3 with two doubles, three runs and two RBIs) for the Eagles, who also produced 11 runs on 10 hits and five errors. Denair's standout player was Shelby Tschantz, who finished with two hits, one triple and one run. The Coyotes had a long season and finished 1-20 overall (1-14 SL). The Coyotes recorded their only win Monday after beating Delhi High 3-2 to avoid a winless season.
