'08 Preview: Turlock Christian's varsity baseball squad won its first four games of the season prior to playing sloppy and dropping one against Hilmar High's Yellowjackets at Pedretti Park Tuesday. The Eagles, under first-year head coach Brandon Hall, were 4-1 prior to Friday's Southern League opener against Le Grand. The Eagles are returning a solid group of players for this '08 season, and based on talent level alone, Turlock Christian has to be the favorite, aside from Mariposa High. Senior Eli Davis will be pitching and playing shortstop this year, and newcomer Trevor Starn will share time on the hill as well. Trevor will have to replace his older brother Travis Starn, who graduated in '07. Turlock Christian will be aiming for a berth into the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs with a No. 1 seed, but they will have to run through the league first. Last year, the Eagles made it into the first round of the playoffs before being bounced by San Juan High of Citrus Heights, 8-3.
The Eagles' next league contest will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday against Waterford at the Atch Pedretti Sports Complex.

shortstop took Garrett Soares' offering out of the park, which may have caused a little bit of deja vu for Davis, who went 4-for-5 with two home runs during Turlock Christian's 18-3 win over the host Coyotes at Denair High's annual Booster's Club Easter Tournament. "That's the second time this year Eli has done that against (Soares)," Turlock Christian first-year head coach Brandon Hall said. "That was a big boost for us. 7-0 rout over Delhi in which she delivered a 10-strikeout, three-hit performance from the circle. "(Huber) was actually playing through a hurt thumb," TC's head softball coach Shandra Hopkins said. "She kept her composure, and she wasn't playing like a freshman. That's usually something you see from a senior." Huber not only earned the win with her arm, but she also assisted the team with her bat as well. Huber is the No. 3 hitter in the order, and she finished 1-for-1 with a run and three walks.
After two scoreless innings, Turlock Christian started doing damage in the top of the third inning. Candice Balswick led off with a double to center field, and then No. 2 batter Courtney Hendrex followed it with a hard-hit single down the third-base line. Huber walked to load up the bags, and Molly Farrar knocked home Balswick with an RBI on the center-fielder error. That made it 1-0 and Hendrex scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Kara Gabrielson batted in Huber for a 3-0 lead, then Kaisa Spycher recorded an RBI-double that scored Farrar for the 4-0 advantage. "It's nice to have your whole team show up for seven innings," Hopkins said. "It was nice to have them all swing the bat. "(Balswick and Hendrex) are extremely important. When they get on, we score. When they don't, we don't."
After a scoreless fourth inning, TC tacked on another run in the top of the fifth. Gabrielson led off with a hit and Natalia Narsa scored Gabrielson with an RBI single. In the top of the sixth the Eagles tallied their final two runs. Balswick walked to lead off the inning. Hendrex and Huber then walked to load up the bases. Farrar recorded her second RBI when she scored Balswick for the 6-0 cushion. TC's catcher Hendrex scored her second run of the ball game on a passed ball to make up the final. "That showed determination and concentration," Hopkins said of the defense holding Delhi scoreless. "They were focused and ready to play the game. They were being confident in themselves." Turlock Christian improved to 7-15 overall and are 3-7 in the Southern League race.

over the TC Eagles at Pedretti Park. Denair's University of Vermont-bound senior tallied up 20 strikeouts and only walked one as she helped lead the Coyotes back to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI postseason. Bacca also went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI against TC freshman hurler Stephanie Huber. Bacca, Denair's senior ace whose elder sister Britne Bacca went on to play for Davis & Elkins College in West Virginia, and was the '07 SL MVP, had a little extra incentive Thursday. Not only was it her last regular-season ball game as a Coyote, but her father Jim Bacca, who is now a coach for Davis & Elkins College across the U.S, was in attendance to see his youngest daughter's final regular-season outing. Bacca certainly didn't disappoint. "That was three straight (wins), and we needed all three," Denair's first-year head coach Paul Michaelis said. "TC is a pretty good hitting team, and they have a couple of really good hitters. "But Kortne threw really well, and we got the hits we needed early on."
Denair finished the Southern League with a 9-6 mark, 9-14-1 overall, and it also clinched the league's No. 2 playoff berth. The Coyotes are scheduled to open up the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI playoffs Thursday on the road at the Lodi Softball Complex. From what it looks like, Denair will have to match up with Vacaville Christian of the Capital Valley Christian Conference. "We're going to try to concentrate on our defense," Michaelis said. "When we lose big it's because we are making errors. When we're not we limit teams to one or two runs." Bacca gave up four hits to TC (4-11 SL). Huber and Balswick each had a hit, and so did Kara Gabrielson and freshman Kaisa Spycher. Huber scored Turlock Christian's only run in the bottom of the fourth.

TC, Turlock Aiming at Consecutive League Titles Turlock Journal - John-Joel Griffiths - 3/8/08
Head coach: Jeff Cederlind, 6th year; 2007: SL champs, 3rd straight. Turlock and Turlock Christian High's varsity golf clubs are both looking to dominate each of their respective conferences, again, this 2008 season.

Mark Cederlind (senior), Anders Jerner (junior) and newcomer Kameron Holgiun (senior) are all currently fighting for the No. 4 spot in the order. Holguin is a former soccer and baseball player who hung up the cleats to pick up the clubs for the spring. Turlock Christian's next match will be Monday against Orestimba High. Thursday, the Eagles (2-0 overall, 1-0 SL) will host Franklin of Elk Grove at Stevinson.

Smith Wins Back-to-Back SJS Masters TJohn-Joel Griffiths - Turlock Journal - 5/14/08
STEVINSON - Turlock junior Sam Smith still doesn't know what it feels like to walk away from Stevinson Ranch without a medal. During Tuesday's Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament, Smith won his second consecutive Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championship after carding a two-under 70. Prior to Smith's win in '07, Turlock had not crowned a section champion in 20 years. The Bulldogs, who went undefeated in the Central California Conference and won the title, finished in fourth as a team and missed the cut for the NorCal Championships by 10 strokes. Christian Brothers of Sacramento won the title with a 388, and Jesuit took second with a 392. Rocklin took third with a 395, and Turlock was fourth with a 405. "We had a great season, and our goal was to get our team to the Masters," Turlock head coach Ben Culala said. "We were the No. 1 team in the CCC and the No. 1 team in the Stanislaus County. The team that beat us in divisionals was St. Mary's, and we beat them by 11 strokes." St. Mary's of Stockton, who edged Turlock for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I South Championship last Monday in Stockton, shot a 416 Tuesday. The Turlock Christian Eagles, who won four consecutive section championships for Division VI, finished 12th with a 456.
"We knew there was tough competition," TC head coach Jeff Cederlind said. "We finished in front of Benitia and Yuba City. We thought we would have a better chance with that being our home course. But very few shot what they should." Andre Navarro of TC shot a team-low 84, and freshman Kathleen Rojas carded 89. Bodie Warda tallied up a 91, while Anders Jerner shot a 93. Mark Cederlind carded a 100, and Kam Holguin shot 109 as that was the throw-away score. "Really it was a good year for us," Cederlind added. "It was a tough way to end it on our home course but we will get over it."...

'08 Preview: The Turlock Christian High girls varsity soccer squad will be looking for a Southern League championship in '08. The Eagles, under head coach Shirley Brand, are aiming to knock off the defending champion Le Grand. The Eagles are already off to a 5-2 preseason start, and will open up SL play Tuesday against the Denair Coyotes. "Hopefully we'll do really well in league," Brand said. "That's what I hope. We want to have to beat teams into the ground to show them that we're better than them. It's more of sportsmanship than anything."
Jessica Linville, who is the starting goalkeeper, is one of three seniors on the squad. The rest are either juniors, or younger. Sara Hunt, Tiffannie Snyder, Emily MacLaren, Bryanna Peace, Morgan Andre and Amy Wright will provide the experience, considering they are all returning from last season. Game time is slated for 4:15 p.m. at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex Tuesday versus Denair.
Coyotes Clip TC Eagles, Improve to 3-0 Turlock Journal - John-Joel Griffiths - 3/19/08
The Denair High girls varsity soccer squad is currently undefeated, and that calls for pizza. "We told the team we'd buy them something if they won the first three games," Denair head coach Aaron Donahue said after the win Tuesday. The Coyotes opened up Southern League play against the Turlock Christian Eagles at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex, and improved to 1-0 in league after a close 2-1 victory over TC, who fell to 0-1-1 in the conference. Denair made it a 2-0 contest during the second half, and it led 1-0 after the first 40 minutes. Turlock Christian senior Emily MacLaren recorded the Eagles' only score during the second half, which made it a 2-1 contest. TC had plenty of chances to score a goal during the final 40 minutes. The Denair defense, partly thanks to freshman goalkeeper Annissa Turpin, just kept the Eagles out of the net.
The Coyotes are now 3-0 overall, and are scheduled to bump heads against Waterford Thursday at home. "This was our third game of the year, and now we're starting to come together," Donahue said. "Conditioning is helping, too. This was not individual, this was a whole team-effort." Denair's Yadi Garcia handed the Coyotes a 1-0 lead on a penalty kick. Donahue specifically called on Garcia to take the shot, and she did exactly what she had to. "Yadi has proved she can make that shot," Donahue said. "She is seasoned at (penalty-kicking)."
During the second half of the ball game, Denair senior Jessie Reape tallied up the Coyotes' second and final goal. Reape scored the goal off of a deflection, which made it 2-0. Turlock Christian's Eagles would not go away, though. The Eagles fired shot after shot, and a majority of those were attempted by Tiffannie Snyder of the Eagles. During the 52nd minute, Snyder dribbled toward the net and put up her third shot on goal of the second half. The shot was blocked by Turpin, and that was where MacLaren put another shot back up. The goal got past Turpin and made it 2-1. Turlock Christian wasn't able to get the ball inside of the net during the final moments, though."This was a really tough loss," Turlock Christian head coach Shirley Brand said. "We did a great job. But (Denair) did a good job, too. They worked hard, and they're a good team. But I am excited. We will get to play them a couple of more times."
Turlock Christian will travel to Delhi High Thursday for its third SL matchup of the year. Denair will host the Waterford Wildcats in their second league showdown.

Turlock Christian High's girl soccer girls varsity soccer team wasted no time working the Waterford Wildcats up and down the field Thursday at Turlock's Regional Sports Complex. Down by two goals in the first minutes of the game, the Wildcats were unable to take control of the lead throughout the game that led to a Turlock Christian 4-0 victory. "We kept our composure when it counted," said Shirley Brand, Turlock Christian's head soccer coach. "The entire team of 11 girls passed and trusted each other."
Eagle forward Emily MacLaren registered a hat trick, with help from teammate Sara Hunt, who pitched in with a single goal. Freshman goalie Gigi Cezar also put together a stellar performance against Waterford defending the penalty box and racking up 10 saves. "She is just a freshman and rises to every challenge," Brand said. "She just played amazingly."

TC, Denair End in Tie Turlock Journal - Roxana Samano - 4/24/08
What began as a promising start for the top ranked Southern League team Denair High School, quickly turned during the second half matchup against the Turlock Christian girls varsity soccer team Tuesday afternoon at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex. Though the majority of Turlock Christian's team is made up of freshman and sophomores, it was enough to keep the competition on the field resulting in a 1-1 tie. "I thought it was a really good game," TC head girls soccer coach Shirley Brand, said. "I would have rather had a win, but a tie is good." Denair's head soccer coach, Aaron Donahue, agreed. "We always play each other hard," Donahue said. "Of course I wanted to win and that's what's neat about the game. They play us hard every time, it is like a little rivalry going on."
Within the first seconds of the first half Denair's scoring leader Jessi Cole wasted no time with a drive to the goal that left Turlock's keeper Gigi Cezar looking for an explanation. "The biggest challenge was keeping up with them because they are a lot like our team," Brand said. Denair's goal prompted Turlock's Sara Hunt to match their goal with one of their own during the second half. "(Turlock Christian) had three core players that were very key and it is hard to work around them," Donahue said. "And they have a good coach too." Concluding the game, Denair 5-1-4 and Turlock Christian 3-5-4 each added their fourth league tie to their record. Turlock Christian will be hosting its next league game against the Waterford Wildcats at 4:15 on Tuesday, at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex. Denair's next league game will be away against the Le Grand Bulldogs at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
